Modern Online Poker Strategy: Moving with the Times

Online Poker / Tuesday, April 24th, 2018

As online poker continues to advance and serious grinders develop better reads on the game, there’s a growing need for novice players to adjust their betting style if they want to become successful playing online casino. Gone are the days when online poker players could simply raise and re-raise their way to victory. To survive in the dangerous waters of the online casino poker world heading into 2018, you need to change with the times.

Modern Online Poker Strategy: Moving with the Times

Long-Term Expectation

But before we outline the latest online poker strategy considerations, it’s important to reiterate a gaming constant: poker is a long-term proposition.

Each move you make at the poker table has an expected mathematical outcome (Expected Value) and, unless the hand is over, it will never be 100 percent guaranteed to succeed. Because every play has a certain chance of success and failure, the game is open to something known as variance. Technically defined as the statistical distribution of results over a period of time, variance simply means swings of good and bad luck.

Understanding this is crucial if you want to become a successful player at the top online casino sites. Instead of looking at each move in isolation and assessing whether it was successful or not, you need to look at the long-term outcome.

For example, moving all-in with pocket aces pre-flop is a profitable move. However, this play won’t always win you the hand. This is variance in action and the reason you need to look beyond situations in a vacuum. Moving all-in with aces pre-flop is always the right thing to do, even if you will lose the pot a small percentage of the time.

Do the Opposite

General online casino theory dictates that playing aggressively is a winning strategy. However, if everyone else is playing aggressively, what should you do?

Over the last few years, serious online poker players have become much more aggressive and that has forced a shift away from the generally-accepted notion that aggression is the key to success.

Let’s assume you’re sitting at one of the online poker world’s popular tables, No Limit Texas Hold’em, with a lot of aggressive players and you’re planning your next move. In situations like this, it’s important to identify the aggro players as quickly as possible and ascertain their position in relation to you.

If those players are to your right, you should allow them to make moves and only re-raise when you have a strong hand. Conversely, if the aggressive players are to your left, you should be wary of making raises because they are more likely to three-bet you.

As well as identifying individual players and their tendencies, you also need to ascertain the tendency of the table as a whole. While conventional wisdom states that it’s best to be aggressive, it can be very tough to do this when everyone else is doing the same thing.

The smartest online casino strategy in this situation (and all situations at the poker table with providers such as betfair) is to do the opposite of what everyone else is doing. While adopting this mentality requires you to be a more observant player, the payoff is that you’ll not only become tougher to beat but a more profitable player.

Evolving with the Times

In line with becoming a more observant and less aggressive (read: more tricky) player, it’s also necessary to adjust your pre-flop raise sizes.

If you observe any of the most successful online poker players in today’s games you’ll see that they now raise 2X or 2.2X the big blind pre-flop. Not only that, but they will only open with the top of their range (i.e. their best hands) from early position. A few years ago, the standard opening raise was 3X the big blind. Strong players would often raise with their top and middle of their range (e.g. hands such as medium pairs and suited connectors) from early position.

However, as things have evolved and players have improved, it has become necessary to tighten up and decrease your overall exposure.
